Would I recommend a Shopify website?
Absolutely. While the learning curve is a little higher with a Shopify website, I have no question that this shift was worth the effort. A little more expensive than most platforms, Shopify still actually provides great value-for-money. Unlike some other platforms where ecommerce is an add-on, Shopify was literally built for this! There are a huge amount of in-built tools to make selling easier, including responsive themes designed for selling, email marketing (with automations and workflows), hundreds of available payment gateways, and thousands of apps to provide any integrations or functionalities your heart desires (and the ability to custom-code anything you can’t find already made).
Like Square, Shopify also has a POS app (with a free version meeting most small business needs, or a paid version if you need something more robust), and a card reader that connects via bluetooth, so if you sell in person, you can use one fully-integrated system. That said, Shopify currently only processes credit and debit cards, so if you have many customer who use regular EFTPOS cards, you might be better looking at an external EFTPOS machine.
